St John’s Social Centre

Social Centre Manager: Sheila Hayward

Rev’d Williams took up the challenge of building a new church hall to replace the old army hut. Funds were severely limited and once again the phenomenal task of raising money for the project was undertaken with house-to-house collections that eventually raised around £4000. The Diocese contributed a similar sum and the Sunday Cinema Fund generously donated £3000 to pay for internal furnishings.

Building work began on the site in Spring 1965. Following a Service of Dedication on Saturday 11th September, the new Social Centre was opened by Ald W Derbyshire, who was Nottingham’s Lord Mayor at the time. He was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress and by the Sheriff and his Lady. David Williams’ daughters, Rachel and Sally, presented floral bouquets to all the Civic Guests.

Since the early days, the Social Centre has been widely used not only by the Church but by the community in the surrounding areas. Nowadays hardly a day goes by without the Social Centre being used for church events, regular club and social events and meetings, parties and wedding receptions. It is a valuable asset to the Church and a recognised venue for use by the local people.

It has a newly refurbished sprung dance floor which makes it ideal for dances.

Recent refurbishment work has included a new toilet for disabled people, a new kitchen complying with current regulations (2011) and a ramp for disabled access.
